This might be a series of many top song lists(I like the music).
In our creationist museum excursion, John Feakes (our tour guide) started several of his arguments by basically saying “I know that (Insert name of non-believer here) said…..” then continued to talk as if one statement by a non-believer was a consensus for the entire field.
In honer of him I would like to make a top five list of atheistic themed songs one christian I once worked with thought were great and supported his belief by the mention of god/church in the lyrics…. but thought Marlyn Manson CD’s should be burnt b/c of there atheist messages. (Yes you may have to re-read that sentence a few times and it still may not make sense and no song #4 isn’t on there by mistake he just didn’t realize it was a Manson song)
Just to give you a bit of background this gentlemen (Who I’ll call “J”) Was a Mormon who had very strong views on what was wrong with our culture but was a very nice guy. One of our biggest arguments came from his involvement in a burning of Marlyn Manson paraphernalia. Being a foreman in my company I enjoy certain perks, one of witch is I get to control the radio. And if anyone wants to play there CD in my truck or on site it needs to go by me first. I never had a problem with the kind of music he would bring to listen to through out our work day… but you can imagine the conversations that took place b/c of these particular choices. J is now a priest, and though he still uses me as a work reference, we don’t talk anymore. But at the time he last worked for me he claimed that all of these songs had a pro-Christ message, each time the songs first came up I would ask him if he had actually listened to the words, he always claimed he had.
I’m not sure the purpose this list serves. Maybe it’s just an example of people hearing what they want to hear. Maybe I’ll compose a list of pro-christ songs that I think are good just to balance this list. But I’ve never supported a POD burning party for there anti-moral message like J has so that doesn’t work…. I guess it’s just to illustrate that just b/c one educated member of a field thinks one way it doesn’t mean the rest of the field thinks the same way…. or that one has logical view just because they are educated…. anyway here is the list.
#1 Judith~ A perfect circle.
Sample lyrics:
“Fuck your god, your lord, your Christ
He did this, took what you had and
left you this way
still you pray never stray never
taste of the fruit
Never thought to question why
It’s not like you killed someone
it’s not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Prey for the one who left you down and paralyzed
he did it all for you.”
#2 Dear God Sarah Mclachlan
Sample lyrics:
“I don’t believe in heaven and hell
no saints no sinners no devil as well
no pearly gate no thorny crown
you’re always letting us humans down
the wars you bring
the babes you drown
those lost at sea and never found
and it’s all the same the whole world round
the hurt I see helps to compound
That Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
is just somebody’s unholy hoax
And if you’re up there you’d perceive
That my heart’s here upon my sleeve
If there’s one thing I don’t believe in…
It’s you, dear God.”
#3 Imagine – John Lennon
Sample lyrics:
“Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today”
#4 Beautiful people
“The beautiful people, the beautiful people
It’s all relative to the size of your steeple
You can’t see the forest for the trees
You can’t smell your own shit on your knees”
#5 One Tin Solder – Coven
“Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won’t be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after….
One tin soldier rides away.”
There are some good songs on that list! Dear God has been a favourite of mine for some time. I hadn’t heard the Sarah McLachlan cover before, but XTC, the guys who did the original, are great!
Dear God is a fantasic song. I am such a huge fan of all her work.
The fact that Christians seem to think that Imagine is such a great song makes me laugh. Both at the meaning of the song (eg how silly religion is) and the ignorance of the believer. How does one possibly think that “imagine no religion’ is a lyric from a pro-christian song?
MAN created religion, Not God…God said to Love and Believe…HE kept it simple…Man messed up a simple plan.
But a god with no heaven and hell does not sound like a Christian god, does it?
Don’t knock Imagine out of the running so fast. I have heard version performed by choirs and soloists with the words “and no religion, too” changed to “and one religion, too”.
There’s also the not-so-subtle “God” by John Lennon. Lyrics here: http://www.lyrics007.com/John%20Lennon%20Lyrics/God%20Lyrics.html
“As part of futuresonic09 Liverpool Anglican Cathedral performed John Lennon’s Imagine using the cathedral bells. Artist / Producer Cleo Evans. Arranger / Conductor Sam Austin.”
Hi there. A few interesting additions. Here’s mine, if ever you care to drop by!

Christians have been stealing and changing things for a long time.. Whenever they feel something is getting in its way the Christians take it and change it up..Look at christian rock and metal and rap. Christmas.. And have you ever heard the story of the ice cream sundae?
