Judgement Day, in Winnipeg!

It’s coming! Run for your lives!

If you didn’t know, there is a group called Family Radio that have been putting billboards up all over the world touting May 21st 2011 as Judgement Day; the day Christ will return to Earth, bring forth the Rapture and save the believers. And then 5 months later on Oct 21, 2011, the end of the world will come.   

A lot has already been written about them, and in fact the Ask and Atheist radio show has put up the website “We Can’t Know“, in response to Family Radio’s “We Can Know“, website, so I won’t address their claims in this post, other than to say I am skeptical that Jesus is coming back on May 21, after he didn’t come back all of  these other predicted times as well.

I was very excited to see a billboard of theirs right here in Winnipeg! On the corner of Pembina and Grant, facing south, is this billboard.

Pretty isn’t it? Go on down, take a look at it, take your picture in front of it, and prepare for the end! The Bible guarantees it, and the Bible has shown itselft to be a reliable document after all…

  1. That’s a very nice photo montage, Scott! My favourite part is the seal that states, “The Bible Guarantees It”! My wife was kind enough to snap a picture of me searching the Bible for just such a guarantee.

    1. Does 1 Kings guarantee a March 21st Judgement Day? Or did I perhaps misunderstand what the Bible is guaranteeing?

      1. Also, which timezone is this going to be in? Because simultaneously it will be May 20/21st, and then 21/22nd. So is this going to start in New Zealand and come our way? Or is Hawaii going to get it a day early?

    2. My guess is that Pat Robertson will intercede on our behalf and have it put off for another five years……. or something like that.

  4. Also, they use some pretty circular logic to work all this stuff out.
    From Wikipedia:

    A commonly cited proof in favor of the May 21st date is:
    According to Camping, the number five equals “atonement”, the number ten equals “completeness”, and the number seventeen equals “heaven”.
    Christ is said to have hung on the cross on April 1, 33 AD. The time between April 1, 33 AD and April 1, 2011 is 1,978 years.
    If 1,978 is multiplied by 365.2422 days (the number of days in a solar year, not to be confused with the lunar year), the result is 722,449.
    The time between April 1 and May 21st is 51 days.
    51 added to 722,449 is 722,500.
    (5 x 10 x 17)2 or (atonement x completeness x heaven)2 also equals 722,500.
    Thus, Camping concludes that 5 x 10 x 17 is telling us a “story from the time Christ made payment for our sins until we’re completely saved.”

  6. There have been non-stop predictions of the imminent events of revelations happening “very shortly now” for 2000 years.

    In fact the Bible clearly states that the Second Coming was supposed to happen 2000 years ago, within a lifetime of Christ’s death:

    “For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

    “Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.”

    “Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.”

    This isn’t something you can pin this on the Counsel of Nicea or events afterward. When the converts of Paul in Thessalonica were persecuted by the Roman Empire, they believed the end was upon them. This belief had largely dissipated by around AD 90, when Christians said, “We have heard these things [of the end of the world] even in the days of our fathers, and look, we have grown old and none of them has happened to us”.
