Anti-Harassment Policy

Before attending a Winnipeg Skeptics event, we recommend that you take the time to review our Community Guidelines and our Anti-Harassment Policy.

The Winnipeg Skeptics is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, or belief in homeopathy (yes, even homeopathy). We do not tolerate harassment of event attendees or organisers in any form. While some important and relevant issues discussed at events such as SkeptiCamp may touch upon sexual issues, please keep all presentations and discussions professional and in an academic context. Explicit sexual language and imagery is considered inappropriate at Winnipeg Skeptics events. Attendees or speakers violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the event at the discretion of the organisers.

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in behaviour that constitutes harassment, the organisers may take any action they deem appropriate, including issuing a verbal warning or expelling the offender from the event (with no refund). If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact an event coordinator or a member of the Winnipeg Skeptics executive immediately.

The organisers will be happy to help participants contact venue security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of any Winnipeg Skeptics event. We value your attendance.

You can contact the Winnipeg Skeptics at info@winnipegskeptics.com.

To report an emergency, please call 911.

Adapted from SkeptiCamp Ohio’s Anti-Harassment Policy, which was in turn blatently copied from the Geek Feminism Wiki Conference Anti-Harassment Policy. If you’re curious as to why an anti-harassment policy is necessary at these events, we recommend reading the rationale presented by the Ada Initiative.
